Discontinuing support for mobile browsers that don’t support authentication cookies

Beginning May 1, 2012, we're ending our support for the small percentage of mobile browsers that can't use cookies. This update will only affect older generation mobile browsers, primarily based in Japan, that don't support authentication cookies for signing in to Google services. Most mobile phones will not be affected.

What's changing?

When signing in to a Google service (like Gmail), after you provide your username and password, your mobile browser receives an authentication token. This allows you to access Gmail, Google Calendar, and other Google services without having to sign in everytime. Authentication tokens are typically stored in the form of a cookie. A few older mobile browsers don't support cookies, and so we temporarily retained a legacy mechanism for authentication.

In order to focus on new feature development, we're ending this legacy mechanism. Beginning May 1, 2012, we will support only mobile browsers that are able to use cookies. On these legacy mobile browsers, you can continue to use other Google services that don't require user login, such as Search and Maps.

How do I know if my mobile browser is affected?

If you're using an older mobile browser that doesn't support authentication cookies, you'll see an alert when you try to sign in to your Google Account or Google Apps account.

If you have an unsupported mobile browser, we suggest you check the mobile browser requirements for Gmail to find a compatible device. We are working to provide the best experience with Google products using the technologies provided by modern mobile browsers.

Updates to Google Docs app for Android: Offline access and improved tablet experience

You can now select any file in the Google Docs app to “make it available offline.” So regardless of whether you’re connected to the internet, you’re always connected to those files.

Google Docs automatically updates your offline files when you’re on Wi-Fi. You can also manually update files anytime you have a data connection by opening the file or tapping ‘Update’ from the Offline section of the app.

For users on Android tablets, we’ve also improved the Google Docs reading experience. Now, when you open a Google document on your tablet while online, you’ll get a high-resolution version of the document. Swipe left and right to flip between pages, or use the slider at the bottom to page ahead quickly.

Log Analyzer, Message Header Analyzer and other Support tools now available to Google Apps administrators.

To diagnose issues pertaining to our migration tools, sync tools and email delivery, we’ve made the following tools available:

Log Analyzer: The Log Analyzer evaluates logs from a variety of our migration / sync tools and gives guidance on resolving most issues visible in the logs. Click one of the links below to visit the log analyzer for that tool:

Updates to the Gmail app for iOS

Several updates were made to the Gmail app for iOS, including -

-Ability to set a custom signature when sending from mobile devices
-Access to configure and set up a vacation responder
-Improved labels with support for nested labels
-New notification sound on iOS 5 to better distinguish received mail
-E-mail messages can now be sent as drawings with support for different colors, brush sizes, lines, erasers, and spray paint

How to access what's new:
-To configure your custom signature or vacation responder, open the Gmail app, select Menu and then the gear icon.
-To draw a new message, compose a new message and select the scribble icon. The new drawing will send as a PNG file attached to the message.
